LeRoy Maas
 
LeRoy Maas is 93 years of age, he and his wife Lillian will be celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on June 16th,  2010. They have four children, four grand-children, and two great grand-children.
 
Roy has 40 years of teaching and coaching experience, 37 years in Albert Lea teaching Physical Education, coaching "B" football, wrestling and track. For 17 years he was also the Recreation Director for the City of Albert Lea.
 
His first two years of teaching was at Onamia High School where he taught Physical Education and Social Studies. He coached football, and was the assistant basketball and track coach. After two years, he moved to Tracy High School where he taught physical Education and coached football, basketball, and track. After one year at Tracy, he came to Albert Lea, Minnesota.
 
Roy's education includes grade school in Ramsey County, and high school at John Marshall in Minneapolis, where he lettered in football and golf. There was no hockey program so he played on three different teams, an Intermediate league, the Senior Minneapolis Park Board league, and the indoor Amateur League in the Minneapolis Arena. Roy then attended St. Cloud State (1936) for one year on a hockey scholarship. He earned a letter in football, hockey, and golf. He then transferred to Bemidji State for the next three years on a football scholarship. He made the all-star team in football and was captain in his senior year. He graduated with honors and a B.A. degree in 1940. In 1950, he received his Masters Degree from the University of Minnesota. In the summer of 1961, he did additional graduate work at the University of Colorado. In 1975, he received a Health Specialist degree from Mankato State. (A specialist degree is one year beyond the masters degree.)
 
Over the years, LeRoy has received many special awards. Some of these awards are listed below:
•1958 "Declared a Minnesota Sports Champion" - presented by the Minnesota Statehood Commission.
•1963 "The Paul Schmidt Award" - Recognized as the outstanding Physical Education Teacher in the State of Minnesota.
•1977 "Teacher of Excellence Award" in the search for the Minnesota Teacher of the Year by the Minnesota Education Association, the Minnesota State Fair Board, and the Minnesota Parent Teacher Association.
•1980 "The Athletic Hall of Fame Award" from Bemidji State University.
•1986 "The Freeborn County Softball Hall of Fame Award" from the Hall of Fame Committee
•2003 "Roy & Lillian Maas Day in the State of Minnesota" from Governor Tim Pawlenty
